Last year, Ford sold 460,915 F-150 pickup trucks. That’s more than enough to establish the F-150 as the top-selling truck in the country for yet another year. However, for the first time in decades, another model outsold the F-150. It’s the Toyota RAV4, the best-selling vehicle in America. The RAV4 didn’t just take the top spot, it embarrassed its closest rival.

The Toyota RAV4 isn’t just the best-selling vehicle in America; it outsold the Honda CR-V by a huge margin

Americans couldn’t get enough of the Toyota RAV4 last year. Car shoppers took home over 475,000 RAV4s, making it the best-selling SUV on the market. The Honda CR-V, the RAV4’s closest competitor, made up 402,791 of the segment’s sales.

However, if Tesla’s sales estimates are to be believed, Americans purchased around 3,000 more Model Y SUVs than they did CR-Vs last year. It’s more than enough to outsell its sibling and No. 2 best-selling EV, the Model 3, by an estimated 260,800 units. But that’s still a long, long way behind the RAV4’s near half-million sales.

2025 is already shaping up to be a strong year for Toyota’s hottest seller. Toyota sold 115,402 RAV4 units in Q1 of 2025. A strong start, yes. But not compared to last year. In the first quarter of 2024, Toyota sold 124,822 examples, nearly 10,000 more than this year. Still, Toyota knew there would be hiccups. A deadly explosion at a Fujioka parts supplier slowed RAV4 production to a stop, impacting the brand’s operations in both Japan and the United States.

The numbers are much less impressive elsewhere in the segment. For instance, Americans bought less than half as many Chevrolet Equinox SUVs as they did RAV4s last year. And at 207,730 units, US buyers purchased 1,604 more Equinox SUVs than the comparable Hyundai Tucson.
