Most drivers can rest assured that plenty of gas station pumps are available in their local area. However, this soon won’t be the case for people in one Iowa town. Their only fuel station is set to close this summer, leaving many on edge.

It’s not uncommon for gas stations to close, but there are usually other options

According to KCCI, drivers in Dows, Iowa, have confirmation that their only gas station won’t be in existence much longer. They rely on the pumps at a Casey’s gas station, located on Dows-Williams Road, to fill up their cars. It will close for business on July 1. A spokesperson said, “We know this is difficult news and appreciate the Dows community and our guests.“

A new gas station will open near Dows at the end of the month. Still, there is concern, especially for older drivers who may be unable to drive to the new location.

The report says it’s about three miles from the current Casey’s gas station, but this is still an inconvenience for many. One resident said, “This is the only place to get anything because they(older drivers) can’t drive out of town.”

There is also concern for the employees of the gas station. For example, Lindsay Barhite, the assistant manager, was recently fired.

According to the former employee, “I wasn’t expecting it. I was never told it until yesterday when they walked in.” Now, at least one other employee has quit in protest.

The mayor has called this an “inconvenience,” but also says they can do nothing to stop the closure. He also said, “Casey’s is actually outside of city limits. People don’t realize that.” The spokesperson also said that they hope to hire employees at nearby locations.
