Subaru buyer drives his purchase straight through the dealer’s glass storefront after they told him he can’t return it
Granted, if you’ve owned more than one vehicle in your life, you likely have a gripe or two. The kind of thing that makes you wish you hadn’t bought that car in the first place. However, you probably resisted the urge to plow your recent purchase through a dealership storefront. Probably. Well, one Utah Subaru buyer thought turning his Outback into a wrecking ball was the right move.
A car buyer crashed a Subaru Outback into a Utah Mazda dealership after the business refused him a refund for the vehicle
The angry customer tantrum is as old as commerce itself. An unhappy patron shouts tirades of hostility or vandalizes property as a “proportional” response to disappointment. However, a Subaru buyer took a tantrum to the extreme. The buyer purchased a used, second-generation Subaru Outback from a Mazda dealership in Sandy, Utah.
The dealership asserts that the sale was “as is,” meaning the buyer accepts the risk of a purchase beyond any warranty. That detail was clearly lost on the Utah car buyer, as he went for a short drive and discovered “mechanical issues” with the used vehicle. Now angry with what he called a “lemon,” the buyer returned to the Mazda Southtowne demanding a refund for the car hours after the purchase.
Management refused, citing the “as is” nature of the sale. Rather than allowing a cooler head to prevail, the buyer reportedly threatened the dealership’s management. He claimed he would “drive through the dealership’s front door,” per Fox 13. Well, he kept his word. According to police, “he did exactly that,” slamming the Outback through the glass storefront of the dealership.
Fortunately, the heinous maneuver didn’t cause any injuries. However, the Outback caused around $10,000 in damages when it drove into the dealership. The man emerged from the crippled crossover, shouting “I told you, mother f——-!” Police arrested the Subaru driver for felony charges. While none of the sales staff were in the immediate path of the car, seven salespeople were nearby.
