Ok, movies, TV, and video games often glamorize car theft. However, criminals often get it wrong. Really wrong. Like car thieves in Detroit attempting to drive GMC HUMMER EV pickup trucks right out of a stationary rail car. Needless to say, it did not go well.

A GMC HUMMER EV is a huge, conspicuous target for car thieves, especially when they get stuck trying to take a few off a train

What do you picture when you think of a train heist? Maybe a group of masked bandidos riding up to the caboose of an old-timey train as it chugs across the desert? We can’t blame you for that. But you might need to update your definition, especially after watching this attempt to steal multiple 9,000-lb GMC HUMMER EV pickup trucks.

The video shows one HUMMER EV already offloaded from the stationary rail car at General Motors’ Factory Zero Plant in Detroit, Michigan. At a glance, the first EV looks alright. But a closer look reveals serious damage. In short, the massive, crab-walking EV pickup truck was stuck on the tracks.

However, that first HUMMER EV was in much better nick than the next one in the video. The second EV didn’t quite make it off the train. At ground level, the damage is a bit more apparent. A shredded front passenger-side tire hugged the rail, while the fender was smashed as if a soda can. The drop also damaged the rear quarter panel directly behind the rear passenger seat.

Unlike so many Hollywood movies, even short drops are often terminal for road-going vehicles on standard suspension. And at over 9,000 lbs, a HUMMER EV falls pretty hard. Unfortunately, these huge, expensive EVs are likely destined for the scrap heap after trauma like that.

What’s more, train heists are more common than you might think. Earlier this year, crews made off with millions of dollars in stolen shoes in modern-day train robberies. The criminals would cut brake hoses, prompting the massive freight trains to stop. They would then offload goods to chase vehicles, including many pairs of ultra-rare, unreleased footwear.
